ABB receives IEC 61850 certificates from DNV GL

ABB is the first company in the world to receive a level A certificate for IEC 61850 System and IED Configuration tools, issued by DNV GL on behalf of the UCA International User Group (UCA), for its substation automation tools IET600 and PCM600.

PARIS, France -25 August 2016- ABB has received today at the CIGRE Technical Exhibition the IEC 61850 system and IED configuration tool certificates from DNV GL. IEC 61850 is a communication standard for the smart grid, including electrical substation automation systems.

ABB is the first company in the world to receive a level A certificate for IEC 61850 System and IED Configuration tools, issued by DNV GL on behalf of the UCA International User Group (UCA), for its substation automation tools IET600 and PCM600. By using certified Edition 2 tools, ABB enables their clients around the world to seamlessly integrate Intelligent Electronic Devices and secures multi-vendor product and system engineering including advantages of the latest features of IEC 61850 edition 2.

In 2015, DNV GL was the first accredited company in the world to provide IEC 61850 Edition 2 client UCA certification service to ensure interoperability between smart grids systems and in 2016 the IEC 61850 standard was brought to the next level by formalizing independent test procedures for system and device engineering tools.

Massimo Danieli, Managing Director of ABB’s Grid Automation business unit, a part of the company’s Power Grids division: “These certificates are an important step for ABB to bring the quality and productivity of our system and device engineering tools to the next level. We are very proud to receive these certificates from DNV GL, a key partner contributing to the UCA lnternational User Group and IEC 61850 community.”

Maurice Adriaensen, Head of Department of DNV GL: “I am very pleased and proud with the excellent partnership with ABB that resulted in the ability to issue these first level A certificates for IEC 61850 contributing to interoperable digital substations.”

Throughout 2015 both ABB and DNV GL worked closely together on pilot testing and refining the test procedures in close cooperation with stakeholders in the UCA. The final testing of our IET600 Integrated Engineering Tool took place in less than one year, followed by the approval of the UCA International User Group in the beginning of2016. The level A certificate for the IED configuration tool PCM600 has been granted in July 2016 and completes the engineering circle.
