DNV is one of the 10 members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). IACS is an interest orgnisation that is dedicated to safe ships and clean seas. IACS contributes to maritime safety and regulation through technical support, compliance verification and research and development.

The main output of the collaboration in IACS is the Unified Requirements (URs) and Common Structural Rules (CSR) for Oil Tankers and Bulk Carriers. In addition, IACS develops Unified Interpretations (UIs) of international conventions and codes.

IACS has consultative status in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and provides technical advice to the Organisation.
